PGA DFS: Top Cash Game Picks for the Truist Championship

For the sixth of eight Signature Events this season, the PGA TOUR is hosting the Truist Championship this week. This event was formerly known as the Wells Fargo Championship and the Truist Championship will be played at the Wissahickon Course (par 70, 7,119 yards, bentgrass greens) of the Philadelphia Cricket Club in Flourtown, Pennsylvania. This will be the venue’s debut at the PGA TOUR level and there will be a limited field of 72 golfers competing for a $20 million purse. As a Signature Event, the Truist Championship features all of the PGA TOUR’s best players, minus Scottie Scheffler, who opted to skip this tournament with the PGA Championship next week.

The PGA DFS Breakdown offers data-driven analysis for each week’s slate, using the FantasyLabs Tools and metrics to highlight notable golfers.

I’ll be highlighting the best cash game/single-entry plays on the DraftKings main slate, but these players are often great options in any contest.

My analysis will frequently reference Strokes Gained, a set of proprietary metrics generated by the PGA TOUR using millions of data points to calculate how many shots, on average, it takes a player to get the ball in the hole from every distance and situation.

Strokes Gained is now available in the FantasyLabs PGA Models.

There are a variety of Strokes Gained-related metrics, but the six main categories you need to know include:

  • Strokes Gained: Off-the-Tee (SG: Off-the-Tee)
  • Strokes Gained: Approach (SG: Approach)
  • Strokes Gained: Around-the-Green (SG: Around-the-Green)
  • Strokes Gained: Putting (SG: Putting)
  • Strokes Gained: Ball-Striking (SG: Ball-Striking), which is SG: Off-the-Tee + SG: Approach
  • Strokes Gained: Tee-to-Green (SG: Tee-to-Green), which is SG: Ball-Striking + SG: Around-the-Green

Don’t forget to check out two key metrics in our models — Perfect% and SimLeverage. You can find an explainer on those metrics here.

The Cliffs Notes version is that you can use SimLeverage to quickly find leverage plays in tournaments, while Perfect% is great for finding the best price-considered plays for cash games.

And don’t forget to utilize our various PGA DFS tools like our Lineup OptimizerLineup Builder, PGA Correlation Dashboard, and our Trends tool.

DraftKings $10,000+ Range

Rory McIlroy ($12,000)

With Scheffler sitting out this Signature Event, McIlroy is the unanimous favorite and should have been priced higher. The Irishman has won three times in only seven starts this season and all three of these victories came in world-class fields, most recently with his win at the Masters last month to complete the career grand slam. McIlroy is arguably playing the best golf of his career and he is an excellent match for the Wissahickon Course, with this venue home to bentgrass putting surfaces. By a huge margin, McIlroy ranks first in strokes gained per round when we compare this field’s last 50 rounds at courses with bentgrass greens. Three of McIlroy’s last seven wins have come at venues with this green type and building around him for cash games is an easy choice this week, with no cut to worry about and plenty of strong value plays to consider.

Now available: our PGA DFS SimLabs Lineup Generator that creates advanced DFS lineups using the power of simulation.

DraftKings $9,000 Range

Patrick Cantlay ($9,500)

Cantlay is always a great option when competing at a course with bentgrass greens, as six of his eight PGA TOUR wins have notably come at venues that present this type of putting surface. On top of being a bentgrass specialist, Cantlay ranks fourth in 400-450-yard par-4 efficiency when we compare this field’s last 50 rounds, which is terrific news for the Wissahickon Course, as seven of the 12 par 4s at this par 70 fall in this range. Cantlay is a match made in heaven for Wissahickon Course and he should contend this week. In nine starts this season, Cantlay has finished inside the top 15 six times.

Jordan Spieth ($9,200)

Spieth finished fourth at THE CJ CUP Byron Nelson last week and he caught fire in the final round, with a 9-under 62, which was one stroke shy of Spieth’s career low and is the lowest score he has posted in over four years. This tournament took place at TPC Craig Ranch, which, like the Wissahickon Course, is a track that features bentgrass greens. Six of Spieth’s 16 career wins have come on bentgrass and he should flourish at the Wissahickon Course this week. Spieth has finished inside the top 18 in four straight starts and he has shot under par in 10 consecutive rounds.

DraftKings $8,000 Range

Daniel Berger ($8,600)

In his last start, Berger shined at another no-cut Signature Event, finishing T3rd at the RBC Heritage. The former Florida State Seminole has consistently finished high on leaderboards all season, with nine top-30 finishes in 11 starts. Specifically, Berger has finished inside the top 15 at all three of the Signature Events he has competed at. Berger ranks ninth in Total Strokes Gained this season and he is an excellent combination of safety and upside.

Shane Lowry ($8,500)

Lowry has had a terrific season with seven top-25 finishes in 10 starts. The Irishman has finished inside the top eight twice this season and both these high finishes came at Signature Events, including a runner-up finish at the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am in February. Lowry knows how to elevate his game when the stakes are the highest and he shouldn’t disappoint this week. This season, Lowry ranks sixth in Total Strokes Gained and he has shot under par in 68% of his rounds.

DraftKings $7,000 Range

Andrew Novak ($7,800)

Novak is in outstanding form. The 30-year-old just won the Zurich Classic with Ben Griffin as his teammate two weeks ago and before this team-formatted event, Novak finished T3rd at the Valero Texas Open and he lost in a playoff to Justin Thomas at the RBC Heritage, which is also a Signature Event that features all of the PGA TOUR’s best players. Novak gained strokes in every major category during both of these last two solo starts and these two finishes moved him up 46 spots in the world golf rankings to a career-best No. 34. Very few players in this world-class field are in better form than Novak and he can’t be ignored at this affordable price tag.

Si Woo Kim ($7,600)

After missing two cuts in a row, Kim has regained his form. In his last two solo starts, Kim has finished T8th at the RBC Heritage and T15th at THE CUP Byron Nelson last week. The 29-year-old shot under par in all but one of these past eight rounds and he ranks 19th in SG: Tee-to-Green this season. Kim ranks 12th in Strokes Gained per round when compared to this field’s last 50 rounds at venues with bentgrass greens and he should thrive at the Wissahickon Course with at least a top-20 finish.

Brian Harman ($7,500)

Harman has finished first, T36th and T3rd in his last three starts, and that latter finish notably came at the RBC Heritage. At that Signature Event, Harman gained strokes across the board and he carded a pair of 5-under 66s at Harbour Town Golf Links. The Wissahickon Course, being a short par 70 that favors accuracy over distance, sets up well for Harman and he is simply too cheap for his upside at only $7,500.

DraftKings $6,000 and Below Range

Tom Hoge ($6,700)

Hoge is a must-play at this sub-$7,000 salary. The veteran has been on a tear, finishing T3rd at THE PLAYERS Championship, T5th at the Valero Texas Open, T14th at the Masters and T18th at the RBC Heritage in his last four solo starts. Hoge gained strokes on approach and with his flat stick at all these events and this incredible four-start stretch has vaulted him up 31 spots in the world golf rankings. Hoge ranks 18th in Total Strokes Gained when we compare this field’s last 24 rounds and he has top-15 upside this week.

Eric Cole ($6,700)

Cole is playing outstanding golf right now and is a steal at this low salary. The 36-year-old finished T5th at THE CJ CUP Byron Nelson last week, including a 7-under 64 in the first round. Cole has finished T26th or better in his last five solo starts – including a T18 at the RBC Heritage – and he gained strokes on approach at all these events. Furthermore, he has shot under par in 15 of these past 20 rounds. The Wissahickon Course is a short par 70 that measures in at 7,119 yards and when we compare this field’s histories at par 70s that are less than 7,200 yards, Cole ranks third in Strokes Gained per round.
