NBA Trend of the Day: Salary Shifts

We truly believe here at FantasyLabs that we have the most unique tools and data available to DFS users. However, we also realize that those tools and data are only as awesome and helpful as our ability to effectively communicate how to use everything. As such, we will continually listen to feedback of what you need and try our best to teach our subscribers how to use all of the cool things we have to offer.

With this in mind, we’ve begun a “Trend of the Day” series. Every weekday we’ll walk our subscribers through an important trend for that day’s slate of games.

Do me a favor, imagine that we are both sitting on our front porch and I lean in and say, “I know you don’t want to make a Trend, I know this; but I’m gonna make this Trend today, ‘cause it’s Friday; you guys all got jobs… and I know you guys got shit to do.”

Thank you for taking the time to allow me to take care of the urge to slide a reference from the movie Friday into this article; we can now move forward. We have a 10-game slate and some big GPPs posted on DraftKings. At the $27 entry level we have a $500k prize pool with 100k going to first and a qualifier for DraftKings Fantasy Basketball World Championship. With that in mind, we are going to want to find some lower-owned players.

One of the ways I like to do that is by targeting players who are in a decent spot, but may have been slumping lately. A player’s performance is often reflected in the movement of his salary. A player who has been playing well will generally begin to see their salary increase while a player who has been underperforming will see their salary begin to decrease. I think we may be able to use those two things to see if there are any players who have been playing well on the year, but have been slumping of late.

Trend: Players with a Salary Increase On the Year and a Salary Decrease On the Month With a Positive Proj. Plus/Minus

Step 1: Fantasy Season Filters > Season Salary Change > Set to “100 to 5800”

jay1

Now we have narrowed our search to players who have seen their salary increase since the beginning of the season. We have a large count of 19,728 and a Plus/Minus of +0.63. Next, we are going to take a look at which of these players have seen a decrease in salary over the past month.

Step 2: Fantasy Month Filters > Monthly Salary Change > Set to “-3900 to -100”

jay2

This has brought the count down to 4,320 while bringing the Plus/Minus up to +1.14. We could stop there, but I think we should focus the trend on players who are offering at least a little value. To do this, we are going to look at players who have a positive Projected Plus/Minus.

Step 3: Projections > Proj. +/- > Set to “2 to 17.33”

jay3

This change has brought our count down to 1,460, but it has brought our Plus/Minus up to +4.18. Now that we have built our trend, this is what we should see.

I like this trend and I wouldn’t add any additional filters if I were going to save it. It has a respectable count and I would not want to take it down much further. Left alone, this trend has 25 current matches, so in the spirit of the Trend of the Day, we can add another filter to help focus on a smaller number of players. You could take this in several different directions. I decided to focus on players who show a positive Bargain Rating.

Step 4 (Optional): Trends > Bargain Rating > Set to “60 to 99”

jay5

This brought our overall count down the 715 and our Plus/Minus +4.39. The Consistency remains unchanged by the additional filter and still comes in at 63.2%. Now, we can take a look at our current matches.

Good luck tonight!
