The PGA TOUR heads to Southampton, Bermuda, this week to play the Butterfield Bermuda Championship at Port Royal Golf Club.

Port Royal Golf Club is a 6,828-yard, par-71 layout featuring Bermudagrass greens. This is the third edition of the tournament, and the second time it will be the primary TOUR stop for the week (it was previously an alternate event). The course was designed by Robert Trent Jones.

The field at the Bermuda Championship is relatively weak but will feature some interesting names on TOUR, such as Patrick Reed, Matt Fitzpatrick, Mito Pereira, Seamus Power, and Danny Willett.

For GPP contests on DraftKings. I will be breaking down the key stats (past 24 rounds) and selecting golfers from different price tiers to provide flexibility for a DFS lineup.

For large-field tournaments, you can utilize our Lineup Optimizer to effortlessly create up to 150 lineups, or use our Lineup Builder if you like to hand-build your lineups.

Don’t forget about the other tools that FantasyLabs has to offer, such as the Trends tool and PGA Correlation Dashboard.

This analysis may reference Strokes Gained, a set of proprietary metrics generated by the PGA TOUR using millions of data points to calculate how many shots on average it takes a player to get the ball in the hole from every distance and situation. Strokes Gained is now available in the FantasyLabs PGA Models.

Strokes Gained: Approach

The weaker the field, the more I tend to rely on statistics. Strokes Gained: Approach is a great way to measure current form and shows who is the most dialed in with their irons.

  • High-end target: Mito Pereira – $10,500 (1st SG:APP)
  • Mid-range target: Russell Knox– $7,700 (9th SG: APP)
  • Value Target: Cameron Percy – $6,900 (3rd SG: APP)

Fairways Gained

While Port Royal Golf Club should give us some low scores, the rough can actually be quite unforgiving. It will be important to target accurate golfers. As evidenced by both Brendon Todd and Brian Gay winning at Port Royal Golf Club, distance off the tee won’t be much of a factor.

  • High-end target: Mito Pereira – $9,500 (7th Fairways Gained)
  • Mid-range target: Russell Knox – $7,700 (4th Fairways Gained)
  • Value Target: Brian Stuard – $7,100 (2nd Fairways Gained)

Strokes Gained Putting: Bermudagrass

These low-scoring events often turn into putting contests. If the majority of the field is hitting greens in regulation, it may come down to whoever can heat up with the putter.  Bermudagrass specialists will have the best chance to do just that at Port Royal.

  • High-end target: Matt Fitzpatrick – $10,400 (2nd Strokes Gained: Putting Bermudagrass)
  • Mid-range target: Denny McCarthy – $8,500 (4th Strokes Gained: Putting Bermudagrass)
  • Value Target: Vaughn Taylor – $6,800 (7th Strokes Gained: Putting Bermudagrass

Par 3: 200+ Yards

With three of four par 3s at Port Royal measuring between 213 and 235 yards,  including one over the ocean that will bring wind into play, it will be important for golfer’s to play these holes well. Further highlighting their importance, the three long par 3s will serve as the second, third, and fifth most difficult holes on the course.

  • High-end target: Mito Pereira–  $9,500 (4th in Par 3: 200+)
  • Mid-range target: Thomas Detry – $8,900 (1st in Par 3: 200+)
  • Value Target: Scott Brown – $6,500 (5th in Par 3: 200+)

Birdies or Better Gained

In 2019, we saw the winner of this event at 24 under par. Last year, extreme winds made scoring difficult in rounds two and three specifically. Regardless of weather this time around, the winner will likely have plenty of birdies.

  • High-end target: Mito Pereira – $10,500 (4th Birdie or Better Gained)
  • Mid-range target: Hank Lebioda – $7,500  (1st Birdie or Better Gained)
  • Value Target: Paul Barjon – $6,800 (3rd Birdie or Better Gained)
