Best Underdog Picks for Friday College Football
| Game | Player | Pick |
|---|---|---|
| Pitt vs. Virginia Tech | Mason Heintschel passing yards | Higher |
| Liberty vs. Delaware | Da’Shawn Martin receiving yards | Higher |
| Penn State vs. Northwestern | Aidan Chiles passing yards | Lower |
Mason Heintschel Passing Yards: Higher
Pitt’s offense gives Heintschel the clearest volume case on Friday. The Panthers average 347.3 passing yards per game, fifth nationally, while Virginia Tech’s pass defense ranks 43rd.
The matchup also points Pitt away from the ground. Its rushing offense ranks 52nd, while Virginia Tech’s run defense ranks 14th, creating more incentive to let Heintschel attack through the air.
There is some risk. Heintschel hasn’t thrown a touchdown pass against a Power 4 opponent yet, and this is Pitt’s first road game of the season at Lane Stadium.
Passing yards don’t require touchdowns, though. If Pitt struggles to generate consistent rushing production, the attempt volume should still give Heintschel a path to the Higher.
Da’Shawn Martin Receiving Yards: Higher
Martin enters Friday with 379 receiving yards and five touchdowns through four games, ranking second in Conference USA in receiving yards.
He has also established himself as Deshawn Purdie’s primary target. Purdie has thrown for 779 yards and seven touchdowns while Liberty has won three consecutive games, including a 34-17 victory over Coastal Carolina.
Delaware does have a disruptive pass rusher in Blake Matthews, who has 4.5 sacks, but the Blue Hens are coming off a 42-3 loss at Virginia.
As long as Liberty continues leaning on its most productive passing-game connection, Martin’s receiving-yard Higher is the preferred angle.
Aidan Chiles Passing Yards: Lower
Penn State’s defense gives Chiles the toughest matchup of the three quarterbacks on Friday.
The Nittany Lions have allowed only two passing touchdowns while recording five interceptions, including Josiah Zayas’ 51-yard pick-six against Wisconsin. Penn State also leads the country in third-down defense.
Protection is another concern for Northwestern. The Wildcats rank 113th in sack rate allowed, while center Ezomo Oratokhai is out.
Northwestern wants to push the ball downfield, but longer-developing throws become difficult when the quarterback is consistently under pressure. Against a Penn State defense that has limited explosive passing production and forced turnovers, Chiles’ passing-yard Lower is the side I prefer.

Conclusion
Our three Friday college football pick’em angles are Heintschel Higher on passing yards, Martin Higher on receiving yards and Chiles Lower on passing yards.
Heintschel should get passing volume against Virginia Tech, Martin remains Liberty’s most productive receiver and Chiles faces a Penn State defense that has been excellent against the pass and on third down.
