Eighteen weeks of regular season action and three playoff rounds later, we have arrived at the crescendo of the 2024 NFL season. Super Bowl 59 is upon us. The Philadelphia Eagles are trying to disrupt the Kansas City Chiefs’ time atop the food chain and prevent the first three-peat in league history. To pull off the upset, the Eagles will need to operate efficiently on both sides of the ball, which has been a strength of the Chiefs for nearly a decade. Whatever the outcome, we’re expecting Super Bowl 59 to cement its position as an instant classic, making Sunday’s tilt a must-watch event for even the most casual football observer.
This article will discuss two or more of my favorite NFL pick’ems from Sleeper Fantasy, where you can use Sleeper promo code LABS1.
Sleeper Fantasy Picks for Chiefs vs. Eagles
Travis Kelce More 63.5 Receiving Yards
Travis Kelce will be synonymous with the Kansas City Chiefs until the end of time. If the hulking tight end sticks around for another playoff run, he could surpass the great Jerry Rice as the all-time leader in playoff yards. As it stands, Kelce is 206 yards shy of Rice for the lead. While it’s virtually impossible for Kelce to surpass the record in Super Bowl 59, he is positioned to make a big dent in it.
Kelce remains Patrick Mahomes’ most frequently targeted receiver. The four-time All-Pro led the Chiefs with 133 targets this season, hauling in 97 receptions for 823 yards. Further, he’s a natural progression candidate after a lackluster AFC Championship performance. Against the Buffalo Bills, Kelce hauled in just two of four targets for 19 yards, a far cry from the seven catches and 117 yards he put up in the Divisional Round.
On the whole, Philadelphia’s pass defense has been one of the best in the league this season. Still, we’ve seen them struggle to contain opposing tight ends. In the NFC Championship Game, Zach Ertz went off for 104 yards on 11 receptions. The week prior, the usually unassuming Tyler Higbee totaled 54 yards on seven receptions. We’re betting that unfortunate trend persists into the finale.
Mahomes gets most of the credit, but Kelce is the engine that drives the Chiefs offense. His receiving yard total doesn’t reflect his ceiling, and he should have no problem accumulating more than 63.5 yards in New Orleans.
Xavier Worthy Less 58.5 Receiving Yards
As high as we are on Travis Kelce, we don’t share the same enthusiasm for Xavier Worthy’s outlook against the Eagles. The Chiefs wide receiver is coming off a career-best 85-yard performance in the Championship Round, but it’s unlikely he comes close to matching that production in the Super Bowl.
Worthy has become a focal point in the Chiefs’ passing attack over the latter stages of the campaign. However, there are some concerning metrics that continue to hamper his outlook. The rookie has an underwhelming 60.2% catch rate, and his overall production depends on big gains. Worthy has three catches of at least 20 yards in three straight games, accounting for 32.5% of his overall production over that stretch.
Moreover, we’re not expecting Worthy to have much success in breaking off big plays against Philadelphia. The Eagles’ secondary has excelled at defending the pass, holding better receivers than Worthy to less impactful performances.
Let’s be real, at least 26 of Worthy’s yards shouldn’t have counted against the Bills. His 45-yard performance against the Houston Texans in the Divisional Round is a more accurate representation of what to expect from the wideout in Sunday’s championship bout. As is reflected in the FantasyLabs Sleeper Projections, we see a decided edge in backing Worthy to come up short of 58.5 yards against the Eagles.
A.J. Brown More 71.5 Receiving Yards
The Eagles faithful had to love what they saw from A.J. Brown last time out. After struggling for weeks and potentially being limited by a lingering knee injury, Brown showed no signs of wear against the Commanders. Philadelphia’s top receiver looked like his Pro Bowl self, a persona he should continue to embody against the Chiefs.
Brown was a menace in the NFC Championship Game. He led the Eagles with 96 receiving yards while hauling in six of eight targets and finding the end zone. That’s a more accurate representation of what we’ve come to expect from the former second-round pick. While he tallied just 60 receiving yards in his three preceding games, Brown averaged 86.9 receiving yards and 5.3 receptions through his first 12 games of the season.
Additionally, Kansas City’s pass defense has looked out of sorts at times this season. Mack Hollins burned the Chiefs on a few occasions in the penultimate contest, becoming the third receiver in as many weeks to record at least 73 receiving yards.
As we’ve seen throughout the postseason, the Eagles passing attack only flies as high as A.J. Brown will carry them. Thankfully, Philadelphia can count on another elite performance from Brown on Sunday. He should have no problem surpassing 71.5 receiving yards against the Chiefs.
DeVonta Smith More 0.5 Receiving Touchdowns
A.J. Brown is a premier high-volume wide receiver, but the Eagles wouldn’t be in the position they’re in without DeVonta Smith. The fourth-year pro has been an elite contributor and has come up with big plays when Philadelphia needs him most. We’re projecting Smith to emerge as a top performer in Super Bowl LIX.
Arguably, no pass catcher has had a more successful postseason than Smith. The Eagles wide receiver has caught all 12 of his targets in the playoffs, albeit with a more modest 121 yards. Smith’s sure-handedness has been a beacon for Jalen Hurts, a trend that has also been invaluable in the red zone. Throughout the regular season, Smith led the Eagles with 12 red-zone targets. More importantly, he’s pulled down a team-leading eight receptions for 38 yards and three touchdowns.
Smith hasn’t found the end zone in three straight games, but he was on a much more productive pace toward the end of the regular season. Six of his eight touchdowns came during an eight-game stretch between Week 8 and Week 17. Considering his reliability in the passing game, he presents as an ideal candidate to record a touchdown against the Chiefs.
The Robin to Brown’s Batman, Smith will fulfill an integral role in the Eagles’ attack against the Chiefs. With Brown commanding safety help, Smith should be free to snap his scoring drought and cash the more than on his touchdowns.
