MLB Trend of the Day: Elite Power Hitters Becoming More Elite

At FantasyLabs, we believe that we have the best tools and data available to those who play daily fantasy sports. We also realize that these tools and data are only as beneficial as our ability to communicate their functionality and worth.

With this in mind, our “Trend of the Day” series features articles that walk subscribers through an important trend each weekday, created with our Trends tool. Also, shortly after you create a trend, you will be able to see it under the “My Trends” column in our Player Model tools.

MLB Trend of the Day: Elite Power Hitters Becoming More Elite

As I mentioned in today’s Plays of the Day for MLB, not every increase or decrease in advanced stats are created equal. My example there was an elite pitcher (Madison Bumgarner today) that sees a pitch velocity bump is more important than a lower-tier pitcher seeing that same increase. I would muse the same trend exists for elite batters, so let’s test it out.

Step 1: Player Filters > Salary > “4,700 to 7,600”

The lower limit here, $4,700 on DraftKings, is certainly high, but we’re looking for the truly elite hitters. Let’s narrow it down to power guys by setting a hard-hit percentage fairly significantly above league average (27%).

Step 2: Adv Stats – Year > HH% > “35 to 100”

And a quick glance at our current matches, I think we’re in the right place…

Step 2: Adv Stats – Recent > HH Diff > “0.1 to 3″

We’re looking for just anything positive here, although I did restrict the top end down a bit to get rid of some small samples. And there we go — a Plus/Minus of +1.26, a very nice number considering the high salaries of these guys.
