Bye weeks shrink your menu fast. Buffalo, Jacksonville, the Chargers, and Washington all sit out this week, so confirm which teams you still own. Beyond noting the bye weeks, I recommend you pace yourself this week before locking in any predictions:

• Recheck injuries Friday and Saturday. One key injury turns a comfortable favorite into a coin flip.
• Scan each team’s future schedule. Burning a top team in an easy week leaves you short when the hard weeks arrive.
• Estimate how many entries share your pick. When most of a pool piles onto one favorite and it loses, everyone who faded it jumps the field.
• Pick the matchup, not the logo. Fandom has no place in a one-loss-and-out format.
• Watch the lock times. Week 7 opens Thursday night and includes a 9:30 a.m. ET kickoff on Sunday in Paris, so many pools close well before the main 1:00 PM window.

Carolina Panthers	vs. Tampa Bay Buccaneers	Panthers -3.5	Carolina averages about 29 points per game against a Tampa Bay offense that puts up only 20.

In my opinion, Houston is the safest team by price. Additionally, the Texans have a bye in Week 8 and a road trip to the Chargers in Week 9. Spending them now costs little. In a large pool where everyone chases the biggest favorite, Minnesota or Denver offers a better chance to separate from the field.

The Vikings face the Lions and Bills in the next two weeks. I treat this as their softest spot in the coming weeks. The Jets and Panthers serve as backup options if your best teams are already used.

NFL Week 7 Survivor Picks to Avoid

Some favorites look safe on paper but carry hidden risk. These are the four games where I keep my pick away.

• Rams at Raiders (Rams -5.5): Los Angeles just lost to Arizona, receiver Davante Adams is out an estimated 6 to 10 weeks, and Blake Grupe, Poona Ford, and Kobie Turner all just got put on IR.
• 49ers at Falcons (49ers -4.5): San Francisco travels as a favorite in a game with a 50.5 totals market. Shootouts shrink the cushion a favorite holds.
• Cowboys at Eagles (Cowboys -4.5): Philadelphia lost quarterback Jalen Hurts for the season, which explains the spread. Still, a Monday night division game is a volatile place to spend a pick. After all, Dallas just lost to Green Bay and Tampa Bay in consecutive weeks.
• Chiefs at Seahawks (Seahawks -2.5): The undefeated Chiefs enter as underdogs. But a spread this tight on Sunday night is closer to a flip than a favorite.
