RBC Canadian Open: Top PGA DFS Picks, Values, and Sleepers for Large-Field GPPs on DraftKings

With the U.S. Open on the horizon next week and the final signature event of the season following that, the PGA TOUR continues its busy season with a trip north of the border to Canada this week. While the RBC Canadian Open is the third-longest continuously operating tournament on the PGA TOUR, it gets a fresh new look and feel this week at a new course. The North Course of TPC Toronto at Osprey Valley will make its PGA TOUR debut this week and is expected to host this event for at least the next two years.

The Canadian Open is a typical PGA TOUR event in terms of structure, but the prestige of the national open draws a strong field, especially from the international pool of golfers. For more details on the field, the course, the weather, and some key stats to track, check out this First Look from RotoGrinders.

Especially in large-field GPP tournaments, you’ll want to make sure to target players who have lower ownership projections than their potential performance.  Finding high-leverage plays is critical for GPP success, so the picks here go against the grain, looking for under-owned options.

All Strokes Gained metrics referenced are from the Rabbit Hole.

Usually, I rely heavily on the Strokes Gained Model in FantasyLabs, which is very predictive of results. I also tend to lean toward players who excel in Strokes Gained: Approach, which is more sustainable week-to-week than a hot putter.

Since these are GPP picks, we can accept more risk in exchange for getting a higher ceiling. High-risk, high-reward options with low ownership create the “boom-or-bust” style lineups that often lead to large-field success. To find guidance for all contest types, check out our full Daily Fantasy Golf coverage each week.

No matter what type of format you prefer, be sure to use the FantasyLabs PGA Models to help you make the best choices. These models use stats and simulations to highlight different players’ strengths and weaknesses. A few critical new stats for GPP play are Perfect% and SimLeverage, which are further explained here.

As you dig into the numbers, you can enjoy the many tools FantasyLabs offers, including the Lineup Optimizer, which effortlessly creates up to 300 lineups. Alternatively, you can use the Lineup Builder if you prefer a more hands-on approach.

Editor’s note: SimLeverage and Perfect% numbers may change after this piece is published. Be sure to check the PGA Models for any updates to the sims.

Rory McIlroy $11,900

Rory has won the RBC Canadian Open twice in his career and stands head-and-shoulders above the rest of the field this week. He has the highest median, ceiling, and floor projections on the board and the highest Perfect% by a wide margin. Even though he also has the highest ownership projection, he is worth paying up for since he brings so much win equity–much like Scottie Scheffler has the last few weeks.

He leads the field in just about every metric used to measure current form. Over the last 36 rounds, no one in the field can match him in Strokes Gained: Tee-to-Green, Total Strokes Gained, Strokes Gained: Off-the-Tee. He also ranks fifth in Strokes Gained: Approach during that timeframe.

In his nine PGA TOUR events this year, he has eight top-25 finishes, five top-10 finishes, and three victories. He won at the AT&T Pebble Beach in a signature event to start the year, claimed the win at TPC Sawgrass in THE PLAYERS, and also triumphed at the Masters to complete his career grand slam in one of the most emotional victories in recent memory.

He only finished T47 at the PGA Championship at Quail Hollow, but he should be ready to bounce back as he tunes up for the U.S. Open and Travelers Championship in the next two weeks. He has played the RBC Canadian Open four times in his career and finished in the top 10 every time, including his two wins in 2019 and 2022.

Throughout his career, Rory has won on such a wide variety of courses that he should be able to overcome whatever TPC Toronto has in store this week. He’s in such good form and brings so much upside that he makes sense to spend up on for GPPs as long as you differentiate your roster in other spots.

Sungjae Im $9,400

Im has the highest SimLeverage of the options in the $9,000s. He ranks in the top 10 in median and ceiling projection and brings the fourth-highest Perfect% in the field. Since he only has the 10th-highest ownership projection, he should be a solid place to get leverage from the top tier, especially compared to his upside.

After an early-season slump, Im has been playing much better as of late. He didn’t make the weekend at the PGA Championship but bounced back with a strong T16 at Jack’s Place last week. He has four top-25 finishes in his last six events, dating back to a T5 at the Masters.

Over the last 24 rounds, he ranks second in the field in Strokes Gained: Around-the-Green and 14th in Strokes Gained: Tee-to-Green. His approach game has been a little shaky, but his excellent work around the green has led to him still converting chances and avoiding big numbers.

Im has a well-rounded overall game and should be ready to take on whatever challenges TPC Toronto has in store. He hasn’t won in a while, but his game looks back in form and his ownership is still lagging a bit.
