PGA DFS: Top Cash Game Picks for the Wyndham Championship

Before the FedEx Cup Playoffs begin next week, the PGA TOUR is hosting the Wyndham Championship. This event will be played at Sedgefield Country Club (par 70, 7,131 yards, Bermuda greens) in Greensboro, North Carolina, which has been the home of the Wyndham Championship since 2008. At last year’s Wyndham Championship, Aaron Rai (-18) won by two strokes. There are 156 golfers competing this week and a standard top-65 and ties cut after the first two rounds. The players who sit inside the top 70 in the FedEx Cup Standings following the Wyndham Championship will qualify for next week’s FedEx Cup St. Jude Championship.

The PGA DFS Breakdown offers data-driven analysis for each week’s slate, using the FantasyLabs Tools and metrics to highlight notable golfers.

I’ll be highlighting the best cash game/single-entry plays on the DraftKings main slate, but these players are often great options in any contest.

My analysis will frequently reference Strokes Gained, a set of proprietary metrics generated by the PGA TOUR using millions of data points to calculate how many shots, on average, it takes a player to get the ball in the hole from every distance and situation.

Strokes Gained is now available in the FantasyLabs PGA Models.

There are a variety of Strokes Gained-related metrics, but the six main categories you need to know include:

  • Strokes Gained: Off-the-Tee (SG: Off-the-Tee)
  • Strokes Gained: Approach (SG: Approach)
  • Strokes Gained: Around-the-Green (SG: Around-the-Green)
  • Strokes Gained: Putting (SG: Putting)
  • Strokes Gained: Ball-Striking (SG: Ball-Striking), which is SG: Off-the-Tee + SG: Approach
  • Strokes Gained: Tee-to-Green (SG: Tee-to-Green), which is SG: Ball-Striking + SG: Around-the-Green

Don’t forget to check out two key metrics in our models — Perfect% and SimLeverage. You can find an explainer on those metrics here.

The Cliffs Notes version is that you can use SimLeverage to quickly find leverage plays in tournaments, while Perfect% is great for finding the best price-considered plays for cash games.

And don’t forget to utilize our various PGA DFS tools like our Lineup OptimizerLineup Builder, PGA Correlation Dashboard, and our Trends tool.

DraftKings $10,000+ Range

Matt Fitzpatrick ($10,600)

Fitzpatrick has been brilliant. In his last three starts, the Englishman has finished T8th, T4th, and T4th, with that latter finish coming at the Open Championship. Fitzpatrick has gained strokes across the board at back-to-back events and he has shot under par in all but one of his last 14 rounds. After a subpar start to his season, Fitzpatrick only sits 43rd in the FedEx Cup standings and he will need to continue to produce high finishes over the next few weeks to ensure himself a spot in the TOUR Championship at the end of the month, as only the top 30 players in FedEx points earn an invite to East Lake. Fitzpatrick gaining a large amount of FedEx Cup points with a high finish or possibly a win is a must at Sedgefield CC this week and he is well worth his slate-high salary.

Now available: our PGA DFS SimLabs Lineup Generator that creates advanced DFS lineups using the power of simulation.

DraftKings $9,000 Range

Hideki Matsuyama ($9,800)

Matsuyama has been inconsistent at Sedgefield CC, making only 3 of 8 cuts, but when he has advanced through the cut at this par 70, he has been excellent, with three top-15 finishes, including a T3 in 2016. Now, the former Masters champion returns to Sedgefield CC playing some of his best golf of the season. Matsuyama has made six cuts in a row and his last two finishes have been a T13 at the Rocket Classic – which was played at another Ross design in Detroit Golf Club – and a T16 at the Open Championship. Matsuyama gained both strokes with his irons and putter at these last two events, and he has a great chance to finish inside the top 10 in this type of form.

Aaron Rai ($9,300)

Rai is a strong option in his title defense at Sedgefield CC. The Englishman won at this par 70 by two strokes a year ago and he shot 65 or better in three of these four rounds. Rai has made 14 of 18 solo cuts with seven top-25 finishes this season and he ranks second on the PGA TOUR in driving accuracy, which is great news for his return to Sedgefield CC, where being in the fairway is crucial for success. Three of the last five winners at this Ross design have finished the event top-five in driving accuracy and Rai is way underpriced for his odds to win the Wyndham Championship this weekend. On DraftKings Sportsbook, Rai is tied for the second-best odds to win this event at +2500, but he is only the seventh-most-expensive player on DraftKings for DFS.

DraftKings $8,000 Range

Lucas Glover ($8,900)

Glover owns a long, impressive resume at Sedgefield CC. Excluding his withdrawal in 2012, Glover has made 10 of 15 cuts at this track and eight of these finishes have been top-30 results, including a two-shot win two years ago. Glover shot a career-low 61 at Sedgefield CC in 2016 and the veteran has been stellar recently. Glover has finished T9th, T5th, and T23rd in his last three starts, in that order, and he has shot under par in 10 of these 12 rounds. The 45-year-old has flashed huge upside during the summer swing in the past and Glover is a fantastic target for cash games this week.

Adam Scott ($8,600)

Scott has finished runner-up, T76th, and T7th in his last three starts at Sedgefield CC and the Aussie is in compelling form. Scott has only missed one cut in his last nine starts and he has finished T31st or better at five of these tournaments. Scott has gained strokes on approach in four of his last five starts and the veteran should be highly motivated to have one of his best performances of the season this week, as Scott sits outside the bubble for next week’s FedEx St. Jude Championship at No. 85 in the FedEx Cup standings. The 14-time PGA TOUR winner should rise to the occasion and supply another high finish at Sedgefield CC this week.

DraftKings $7,000 Range

Cameron Young ($7,900)

After missing the cut at the Open Championship, Young should get back on track at the Wyndham Championship. The 28-year-old finished T22nd in his first attempt at Sedgefield CC last season—including an 8-under 62 in the second round – and prior to missing the cut at Royal Portrush, Young had made eight cuts in a row with three top-seven finishes during this stretch. The Wake Forest product ranks 20th in Total Strokes Gained when we compare this field’s last 24 rounds and Young brings excellent odds to win the Wyndham Championship relative to his DFS salary. On DraftKings Sportsbook, Young carries +5000 odds to win this tournament, which are the same odds as Rickie Fowler at $8,500.

Emiliano Grillo ($7,500)

Grillo finished T59th at last year’s Wyndham Championship, but it’s safe to expect a much better result from him this week. Grillo has advanced to the weekend in 13 of his last 15 starts with eight top-25 finishes. Included in this run is a runner-up at the John Deere Classic, a T19 at the U.S. Open and a T20 at the 3M Open last week. Grillo ranks ninth in Total strokes Gained when we compare this field’s last 24 rounds and the professional out of Argentina’s impressive run should continue at Sedgefield CC.

Christian Bezuidenhout ($7,200)

Bezuidenhout has made eight of his last 10 cuts with four top-20 finishes during this span, including a T20 at last week’s 3M Open. The South African closed this event with a 6-under 65 and Bezuidenhout will now look to carry this momentum over to Sedgefield CC, where he has never missed a cut in four tries, most notably with a T22 last season. Bezuidenhout has similar upside this week and is one of the best values on the board.

Matt Kuchar ($7,000)

Kuchar has finished T29th, T38th and T12th at Sedgefield CC, in that order. That T12th came just last season and the veteran was the leader of the Wyndham Championship following the second round of the event. Kuchar ranks fifth in Strokes Gained per round at Sedgefield CC among the players in this field that have competed at the track more than once and Kuchar has been very reliable this season. The 47-year-old has made 10 of 12 cuts with four top-25 finishes and Kuchar posted a season-best T5 finish at the John Deere Classic in his last start.

Be sure to check out all the pick’ems Sleeper has to offer with Sleeper promo code FL55.

DraftKings $6,000 and Below Range

Mark Hubbard ($6,900)

Hubbard has only failed to make the cut once in his last 10 starts and he has displayed strong upside during this time, with three top-25 finishes. Hubbard has shot under par in six of his last eight rounds and at Sedgefield CC, he has advanced to the weekend in four of his last six starts at the venue, including a pair of top-25 finishes. This is the first time Hubbard has been priced under $7,000 on DraftKings in six starts and he is a steal at this low price tag.

Antoine Rozner ($6,700)

Rozner extended his cut streak to 15 in a row last week at the 3M Open and while he finished T72nd at TPC Twin Cities, this was a product of poor putting, as he ranked third-to-last in SG: Putting for the event. Conversely, Rozner’s irons remained terrific, with him finishing the event fourth in SG: Approach. Rozner has gained strokes on approach at nine straight tournaments and he ranks 16th in SG: Approach this season. Rozner’s putting can only improve after last week and if he continues to strike the ball at an elite level, the French professional should have no issues making the cut in his Wyndham Championship debut this week.
