PGA DFS: Top Cash Game Picks for the Procore Championship

The Fall Swing begins this week with the Procore Championship at North Course (par 72, 7,138 yards, Poa annua/bentgrass greens) of the Silverado Resort in Napa, California. This course has hosted the Procore Championship since 2015 and at this event last year, Patton Kizzire (-20) won by five shots. There are 144 golfers competing this week – including the nine players for the USA Ryder Cup team – and there will be a top-65 and ties cut after the first two rounds.

The PGA DFS Breakdown offers data-driven analysis for each week’s slate, using the FantasyLabs Tools and metrics to highlight notable golfers.

I’ll be highlighting the best cash game/single-entry plays on the DraftKings main slate, but these players are often great options in any contest.

My analysis will frequently reference Strokes Gained, a set of proprietary metrics generated by the PGA TOUR using millions of data points to calculate how many shots, on average, it takes a player to get the ball in the hole from every distance and situation.

Strokes Gained is now available in the FantasyLabs PGA Models.

There are a variety of Strokes Gained-related metrics, but the six main categories you need to know include:

  • Strokes Gained: Off-the-Tee (SG: Off-the-Tee)
  • Strokes Gained: Approach (SG: Approach)
  • Strokes Gained: Around-the-Green (SG: Around-the-Green)
  • Strokes Gained: Putting (SG: Putting)
  • Strokes Gained: Ball-Striking (SG: Ball-Striking), which is SG: Off-the-Tee + SG: Approach
  • Strokes Gained: Tee-to-Green (SG: Tee-to-Green), which is SG: Ball-Striking + SG: Around-the-Green

Don’t forget to check out two key metrics in our models — Perfect% and SimLeverage. You can find an explainer on those metrics here.

The Cliffs Notes version is that you can use SimLeverage to quickly find leverage plays in tournaments, while Perfect% is great for finding the best price-considered plays for cash games.

And don’t forget to utilize our various PGA DFS tools like our Lineup OptimizerLineup Builder, PGA Correlation Dashboard, and our Trends tool.

DraftKings $10,000+ Range

Justin Thomas ($10,200)

While rostering Scottie Scheffler is a totally viable move, like every week, he tees it up; the world No. 1 has never competed at the North Course before, and his salary is up to an absurd $14,400 on DraftKings. Rostering Scheffler severely limits what you can do with the rest of your lineup and while it’s scary to fade him, opting to build around a much cheaper Thomas is a logical move that helps you create a much safer lineup for cash games. Thomas has finished inside the top eight in each of his last four starts at the North Course and he posted an 8-under 64 at the par 72 in 2020.

Thomas ranks first in Strokes Gained per round at the North Course among the players in this field that have competed at the track more than once and the Alabama product is coming off a T7 finish at the TOUR Championship last month. This season, Thomas has made 18-of-20 cuts and he has carded eight top-10 finishes, including a win at the RBC Heritage. Thomas has a true knack for playing great golf during the fall and he should finish inside the top five this weekend. Thomas has four career wins from September-November and when we compare this field’s results at fall events, the 32-year-old ranks second in Strokes Gained per round.

Now available: our PGA DFS SimLabs Lineup Generator that creates advanced DFS lineups using the power of simulation.

DraftKings $9,000 Range

Patrick Cantlay ($9,500)

Cantlay just finished runner-up at the TOUR Championship three weeks ago and the California native loves competing in his home state. Cantlay has won twice in California and he has finished T17th and T40th in his two starts at the North Course. Overall, when we compare this field’s results in the Golden State, Cantlay ranks first in Strokes Gained per round. The 33-year-old has finished inside the top 15 in 10 of his 19 starts this season and Cantlay easily could have warranted a $10,000 salary this week.

Cameron Young ($9,300)

Young missed the cut in his lone start at the North Course in 2021, but this was just his fourth career start on the PGA TOUR, when he was the No. 173 ranked player in the world. Now, Young is the No. 20 ranked player four years later, and he is on an absolute tear, finishing first, T5th, T11th, and T4th in his last four starts, in that order. Young ranks fifth in Total Strokes Gained when we compare this field’s last 24 rounds and he ranks sixth in SGP this season, putting him in prime position to flourish at the vulnerable North Course, where catching fire with your flat stick is essential. When Kizzire won by five shots at this track last season, he led his field in SGP, making him the fifth winner in a row at the North Course to finish the week top-16 in SGP.

DraftKings $8,000 Range

Davis Thompson ($8,800)

Thompson has been great at the North Course, finishing T9th and T30th in his two starts at the venue and the 26-year-old made some serious noise in his final start of the summer, finishing T11th at the Wyndham Championship last month. At Sedgefield CC, Thompson gained strokes across the board and he tallied a 5-under 65 in the second round. If Thompson can carry this momentum over to the North Course this week, he could contend at this track he knows very well.

Michael Thorbjornsen ($8,000)

Thorbjornsen has only missed two cuts in his last nine solo starts and he has generated four top-25 finishes during this span, including a T4 at the Rocket Classic in July, which is a similar birdie fest to the Procore Championship. Thorbjornsen ranks 16th in Total Strokes Gained when we compare this field’s last 24 rounds and he should have a strong showing in his second attempt at the North Course this week. Thorbjornsen finished T50th in his first start at this course last season, but he now returns to the Napa-based track 129 spots higher in the world golf rankings.

DraftKings $7,000 Range

Patrick Fishburn ($7,900)

Fishburn is a tremendous target at this price point. The 33-year-old finished T3rd in his Procore Championship debut last season and he has made six of his last seven cuts with three top-20 finishes, including a T8 at the Wyndham Championship in his last start. Fishburn closed that event with back-to-back 5-under 65s and he ranks sixth in Total Strokes Gained when we compare this field’s last 24 rounds.

Beau Hossler ($7,700)

Hossler has made four of his last five cuts at the North Course and all four of those finishes were top-30 results. The veteran now returns to Napa in compelling form, finishing inside the top 15 in four of his last five starts. Hossler impressively ranks third in Total Strokes Gained when we analyze this field’s last 24 rounds and he ranks eighth in SG: Around-the-Green this season, which is a great sign for the North Course. This par 72 features tiny putting surfaces and for three years running, the winner of the Procore Championship has finished the event top-seven in SG: Around-the-Green.

Emiliano Grillo ($7,500)

Grillo has been consistent, making 10 of his last 11 cuts with six top-25 finishes during this stretch and he has been outstanding at the North Course throughout his career. Grillo won in his first start at the par 72 in 2016, which is just one of his five top-30 finishes in eight appearances at the North Course. Grillo ranks fifth in Strokes Gained per round at the North Course among the players in this field that have teed it up on this track more than once and his $7,500 salary for this week is easily the cheapest he has ever been for an event at the North Course.

Victor Perez ($7,500)

Perez should have a strong Procore Championship debut this week and he is one of the best values on the slate at this cheap price tag. This season, Perez has made 14-of-20 cuts with six top-25 finishes and he ranks 19th in SG: Approach. Perez also ranks sixth among this field in 400-450-yard par-4 efficiency this season, making the French professional an excellent match for the North Course, as six of the 10 par 4s at this par 72 fall between 400-450 yards.

DraftKings $6,000 and Below Range

David Lipsky ($6,900)

Lipsky has made five straight cuts and he has thrived at two low-scoring events during this cut streak, with T3 finishes at both the John Deere Classic and 3M Open. Lispky has shot under par in 15 of his 20 rounds during this timeframe and he now brings this stellar form to the North Course, where he finished runner-up last season, including a 7-under 65 in the first round. Lipsky has finished inside the top 30 in three of his four starts at North Course and he is the best target in the $6,000 range this week.

David Skinns ($6,900)

Skinns has advanced through the cut in both of his starts at the North Course, including a T44 last season and he has the potential to outdo himself with a higher finish at the par 72 this week. Skinns has only failed to make the cut twice in his last 10 starts and he has been in the mix during this span, posting three top-10 finishes. Skinns has gained strokes on approach at four tournaments in a row and he impressively has shot under par in 15 of his past 20 rounds.
