NFL Thursday Trend of the Week: Highly-Targeted TEs With Line Movement

At FantasyLabs, we believe that we have the best tools and data available for those who play daily fantasy sports. We also realize that these tools and data are only as beneficial as our ability to communicate their functionality and worth.

With this in mind, our Trend of the Week series features articles that walk subscribers through an important trend created with our Trends tool. Also, shortly after you create a trend, you will be able to see it under the “My Trends” column in our Player Models.

NFL Thursday Trend of the Week

The point of this weekly article will be to feature a certain trend solely geared towards the Thursday game.

This week, I decided to take a look at Panthers tight end Greg Olsen, who gets a lion’s portion of his team’s market share of targets. My thought process isn’t sneaky for this trend, but it is relevant: How does market share data of a good tight end correlate with Plus/Minus?

Step 1: Player Filter > Salary > 6,500 to 8,500

Tight End With Targets 1

We’re using salary here as a proxy for ‘good’ tight ends.

Step 2: Market Share Filters > Market Share Rec Targets > 19 to 27.2

This step improved the Plus/Minus by over a full point and the Consistency increased 10 percent. It seems that targets equate to consistent performances, which is intuitive. The average ownership jumped here, too, but not as much as I would have expected.

Step 3: Vegas Filters > Line Change > 0.1 to 3.8

Tight End With Targets 3

I could’ve narrowed this filter down a lot, but I didn’t want to lower the sample size too much. Basically this filter says, “The implied line for the team moved in a good direction.”

In the 27 instances that fit Greg Olsen’s scenario for tonight’s opener, tight ends have recorded a nice +3.37 Plus/Minus, 63 percent Consistency, and an average ownership of 10.2 percent.

Takeaway

Love from the quarterback means love for our DFS players. According to this trend, Greg Olsen is a strong play tonight.
