MLB DFS Breakdown (July 24): Rodon or Burnes in Marquee Matchup?

Saturday’s MLB DFS main slate features 10 games starting at 7:10 pm ET. We’ll be breaking it down using the FantasyLabs tools and Player Models.

Pitchers

The four pitchers projected to score the most fantasy points today are:

  1. Carlos Rodon (L)
  2. Corbin Burnes (R)
  3. Kevin Gausman (R)
  4. Chris Bassitt (R)

A top-five rated pitcher in the Bales Model for both DraftKings and FanDuel today is Carlos Rodon from the Chicago White Sox. Last start, Rodon pitched seven scoreless innings where he allowed only one hit and struck out 10 opposing batters. Hoping to continue his dominance after the MLB All-Star break, Rodon will be taking on the Milwaukee Brewers tonight. The Brewers have a 6.5 game lead in the National League Central and are eager to extend this advantage.

The highest priced pitcher on the slate for both DraftKings and FanDuel is Corbin Burnes from the Milwaukee Brewers. Although he was unable to finish the complete game, Burnes struck out 12 batters in 8.1 scoreless innings while allowing only five hits against last start. In a game that figures to being a pitching duel, the White Sox and Brewers are projected for an implied runs total of 3.4 and 3.7 runs respectively.

The highest-rated pitcher on Bales Model for DraftKings tonight is Kevin Gausman from the San Francisco Giants. In 117.2 innings pitched this year, Gausman has an impressive 9-3 record, 1.84 ERA, 0.85 WHIP, and 138 strike outs. Although he is priced high, Gausman is considered an 89% bargain by Pro Trends today. He’ll take on the Pittsburgh Pirates who have the third worst run differential in all of baseball (-125 runs). Another reason to back Gausman is that the Pirates have hit the fewest home runs in MLB this season (81).

Another pitcher with an impressive 10-3 win-loss on the slate today is Chris Bassitt from the Oakland Athletics. Although he picked up a loss last outing, Bassitt threw for seven innings allowing only three runs against which was enough for a quality start. A concern with Bassitt recently is that he has been giving up a decent amount of home runs recently, four total in his last three starts. Hoping to avoid long balls and keep batters guessing, Bassitt will be taking on the Seattle Mariners tonight. A promising statistic and reason to back Bassitt is that the Mariners rank sixth in baseball with 939 team strikeouts in only 98 games.

Value

The biggest bargain on the slate is Tony Gonsolin from the Los Angeles Dodgers (93% bargain). Gonsolin has not pitched many innings this season, however, he has been quite effective in the innings he has pitched. In 28.2 innings on the mound, Gonsolin has struck out 34 opposing batters and has an ERA of 2.83. He is priced much higher on DraftKings but is a solid pitching option on both sites.

Another value pitcher to consider is Carlos Hernandez from the Kansas City Royals. Pro Trends projects Hernandez as a 94% bargain and a solid option on DraftKings. Hernandez will be taking on the hottest team in baseball, the Detroit Tigers who have won seven of eight games since the All-Star break. With that in mind, it is suggested to proceed with caution if rostering Hernandez in your lineups.

Hitters

Notable Stack

Today’s top projected points stack comes to you from the -205 Los Angeles Dodgers:

  • Chris Taylor (R)
  • J. Pollock (R)
  • Justin Turner (R)
  • Will Smith (R)

The Dodgers have the fourth-highest projected implied runs total on the slate (5.1 runs) and are hoping to benefit from playing the Colorado Rockies, who have struggled away from home (10-34). On the mound for the Rockies will be left-hander Kyle Freeland who is coming off back to back starts in which he allowed three earned runs. On FanDuel, this stack will cost you $13.7k in salary and are projected for a combined 48.9 fantasy points.

Other Hitters

Staying in the west coast, the highest rated batter on Bales Model for both DraftKings and FanDuel tonight is LaMonte Wade from the San Francisco Giants. Although he has struck out in four of his last 10 at bats, Wade has a single, double, triple, three RBIs, and one stole base his last two games. Wade’s strong plate presence is a reason the Giants have the best record in MLB (61-36).

Another highly rated batter on Bales Model is Ji-Man Choi from the Tampa Bay Rays. The Rays have the highest projected implied runs total on the slate (5.6 runs) and are hoping to take advantage of J.C. Mejia who has an ERA of 7.53.

Value

Lastly, here is a handful of batters to consider while completing your lineups today that are projected for a high fantasy points/salary:

  • Albert Pujols
  • Sheldon Neuse
  • Ryan Jeffers
  • Harold Castro
  • Sean Murphy
