MLB DFS Breakdown (Sunday, August 1): Charlie Morton, Jose Berrios Highlight Best Pitching Choices

Sunday’s main Major League Baseball slate features 10 games starting at 1:05 pm ET. We will be using Bales Model to highlight some of the best players to consider.

Pitchers

The four pitchers projected to score the most fantasy points are:

Charlie Morton (R)

Jose Berrios (R)

Adam Wainwright (R)

Marcus Stroman (R)

The highest-priced pitcher on the main slate for DraftKings is Charlie Morton from the Atlanta Braves. Morton has an impressive 10-3 record, while striking out 135 batters in only 116 innings pitched. He does have a tough task on the mound, as he will be facing the NL Central division-leading Milwaukee Brewers. This will be the Brewers last game of a six-game road trip in which they won four of the first five games.

A strong reason to back Morton is that the Brewers rank third in MLB with 1,012 team strikeouts in only 105 games played. Bales Model considers Morton a top-four pitching option on both DraftKings and FanDuel.

The second-highest rated pitcher on Bales Model for DraftKings main slate is Jose Berrios from the Toronto Blue Jays. Berrios was just traded a couple days ago from the Minnesota Twins and this will be his first start for his new ball club.

Personally, I am hesitant to play pitchers who have just been traded for two reasons. One, we don’t exactly know how the player will adjust to his newfound environment. Pitchers can be freaks of nature at times and usually have a specific routine before starts. Another reason is we do not know how much faith the player’s new manager has in them and how long they will be willing to let them play. Of course, trust is a big thing in life and sometimes must be earned. With that said, Berrios has been electric throughout his 2021 pitching campaign and is in line for another strong fantasy output.

A pitcher who is coming off an impressive four hits allowed over seven innings quality start is Adam Wainwright from the St Louis Cardinals. At the age of 39, Wainwright has still pitched well this season. In 125.2 innings, he has a 3.51 ERA, 8-6 record and 119 strikeouts. He will be on the mound against the Minnesota Twins, who are 17 games back in the AL Central. Wainwright is the highest-priced pitched on FanDuel’s main slate.

A pitcher projected for a large sum of fantasy points, but is not highly rated on Bales Model is Marcus Stroman from the New York Mets. Two starts ago, Stroman was on his “A game” against the Cincinnati Reds. In eight innings pitched, he allowed only one hit, one walk and struck out seven batters. In his last outing, he did well with damage control as he allowed only two runs while nine batters reached base in five innings. Stroman is looking for lightning to strike twice, as he takes on the Reds again.

Value

The highest-rated pitcher on Bales Model for both DraftKings and FanDuel is Jordan Montgomery from the New York Yankees. Montgomery has been on absolute fire in his last two starts. In the 10.2 innings pitched, he allowed eight hits, no runs against and struck out 11 opposing batters. Hoping to continue this extremely strong run of form, Montgomery will be pitching against the Miami Marlins, who are projected for the lowest implied runs total on the slate (3.1 runs).

Hitters

Notable Stack

The top projected points stack comes to you from the New York Mets (-181) on the schedule:

  • Brandon Nimmo (L)
  • Jeff McNeil (L)
  • Peter Alonso (R)
  • Dominic Smith (L)

The Mets are projected for the fourth-highest implied runs total on the slate. This marks the final game in an 11-game home stand in which the Mets have are 5-5 through the first 10 games. Hoping to finish on a positive note, they will be up to bat against Vladimir Gutierrez from the Cincinnati Reds who has a 4.75 ERA and 1.43 WHIP. On FanDuel, this stack will cost you $12,000 in salary and is projected for a combined 48.7 fantasy points.

Other Hitters

Back to the well, the highest-rated floor play on Bales Model for both DraftKings and FanDuel is Juan Soto from the Washington Nationals. Soto is now on a five-game hitting streak, in which he has also scored six times. He will be up to bat against Chicago Cubs pitcher Adbert Alzolay, who is 4-11 with a 4.73 ERA.

The batter projected for the highest ceiling on Bales Model for both DraftKings and FanDuel is Jose Ramirez from the Cleveland Indians. Ramirez is coming off a two-hit performance last game, in which he easily reached double-digit fantasy points. The Indians are eight games back from the Chicago White Sox in the AL Central, which means they’re in desperate need for more solid games from players like Ramirez.

Value

Lastly, here is a handful of batters to consider while completing your lineups projected for a high fantasy points/salary:

  • Victor Robles
  • Nate Lowe
  • Brad Miller
  • Wilmer Difo
  • Ben Gamel
