World Cup – Saturday, December 3

10 am ET/7 am PT – USA (+165 to advance) vs. Netherlands (-250 to advance)

The Knockout Round begins with the US team taking on a premier Dutch squad that is certainly not lacking in talent. Many of the Dutch players play professionally for top European teams and the team had no trouble winning Group A. Health concerns are an issue going into the match, with many Dutch players battling illness and US star forward Christian Pusilic battling the after-effects of a knee to the pelvis. The USA knows the pressure of winning in the World Cup, and while the odds don’t favor them, it would not be a huge surprise for the US team to at least tie the match (+230) and force overtime. The Americans aren’t ready to go home, and they will be ready for everything the Dutch team throws at them. Go USA!

2 pm ET/11 am PT – Argentina (-1400 to advance) vs. Australia (+700 to advance)

The second match of Saturday is definitely the surprise matchup of the weekend, if not the entire Knockout Round. Australia is not a soccer hotbed, and few expected the Socceroos to win any games in the World Cup. After getting blown out by France in their first match, they came out swinging and took down Tunisia and Denmark to advance to the Knockout Round. Their reward is a matchup against Argentina, who lost to Saudi Arabia in the upset of the tournament. They quickly recovered and easily dispatched Mexico and Poland to advance to the next Round. If you believe the odds, this game should just be awarded to Argentina since they are so heavily favored. They were heavily favored against Saudi Arabia too, and we all saw what happened in that game. Australia’s magical run may end on Saturday, but no one should count them out yet, even against mighty Argentina.

World Cup – Sunday, December 4

10 am ET/7 am PT – France (-900 to advance) vs. Poland (+475 to advance)

Any team with Kylian Mbappe should rightly be favored to win the World Cup, and the French squad is in fine form thanks in part to Mbappe’s three goals in the first three matchups. But even France failed to make it through Group D undefeated, falling 1-0 to Tunisia, though they didn’t start Mbappe in that game. Unfortunately for Poland, Mbappe is ready to go, and France is looking to take their next step toward becoming the first team to repeat as World Cup champions since Brazil did it in 1962. Poland may not put up much of a fight, with their only Group win coming against lowly Saudi Arabia. This game could be over early.

2 pm ET/11 am PT – England (-450 to advance) vs. Senegal (+290 to advance)

England is always a popular World Cup team, and this year is no exemption. After taking down Iran and Wales in Group B, the Three Lions seem ready to repeat their surprise semifinal appearance at the 2018 World Cup. They did tie the US squad 0-0, which is always worth mentioning, but England is ready to get past Senegal and on to the Quarterfinals. Is Senegal ready to take down England? Questionable, particularly since their most notable Group A victory was against minnow Ecuador. The only way England loses this game is by defeating themselves with a frustrating and mistake-filled performance, something that has happened to the team many times over the years and could easily happen again on Sunday.
