UMass wins this game on defense and takeaways. The Minutemen allow 324.1 yards per game, which ranks 36th in the FBS, and 21.1 points per game, which ranks 42nd. Their +7 turnover margin ranks 11th, while Ball State sits at -4, good for 105th. Ball State quarterback Keldric Luster has thrown six interceptions, two of them against Sacramento State. UMass doesn’t need a big offensive night when it keeps getting extra possessions.

Ball State’s defense is the biggest reason I like the Minutemen. The Cardinals give up 422.9 yards per game (126th) and 35.3 points per game (131st). They also rank 122nd in red zone defense, letting opponents score on 92.9% of trips. UMass ranks 24th in red zone offense, scoring on 91.3% of its chances. That matters because the Minutemen rank just 115th in total offense.

I’m not ignoring the risks. UMass has lost four straight, and the 35-16 loss at UConn stung. The offense converts only 32% of its third downs, which ranks 126th. Ball State covered in five of its eight games and won 34-17 last time out. Still, UMass quarterback William Watson III completes 69.6% of his passes with only two interceptions, and he faces a pass defense that ranks 106th.

My pick is UMass -2.5, and I’m buying the spread back down from -3.5. Three is one of the most common margins in college football. At -3.5, a three-point UMass win loses, and at -2.5 that same finish cashes. The extra cost is small next to the chance of landing on that number. UMass opened at -2.5, so I’m paying to get the opening line back.
